Marathon

The longest race at any Olympiad is the marathon. This race commemorates Phidippedies great run from Marathon to Athens to pronounce Greek victory over the invading Persians. A distance of 42 km, a truly staggering run to announce a victory. This victory marked the retention of the Greek culture and although the Persian empire would try again to subjugate Greece, they would fail for the last time at Thermopylae.
