Meet the Maker: Varvara

Some artists begin with a plan. Varvara begins with a feeling.

An illustrator and ceramic artist currently based between Budapest, Varvara has been creating since childhood. After spending her teenage years in the UK studying Animation and Computer Illustration, she continued her artistic education in illustration, gradually developing a visual language that is entirely her own.

Today, drawing is a daily ritual. Rather than carefully controlling every line, she lets intuition take over, allowing forms and characters to emerge naturally. The result is a dreamlike world filled with fluid figures, surreal creatures and symbolic imagery that feels both ancient and strangely futuristic.

Varvara describes her work as "Liquid Surrealism in the Age of Aquarius." It is a fitting description for art that explores imagination, mythology and the subconscious while reflecting life in the digital age.

One of her favourite works is *Sky Sphinxes* (2021), a drawing she still returns to for inspiration.

> "I like the movement and fluidity that I unintentionally achieved in this work. The sphinxes feel as if they're breathing—about to take flight or attack. I'm still trying to recreate that feeling in my recent work."

Her influences stretch far beyond contemporary art. Carl Jung's archetypes, Jean Baudrillard's ideas on simulation, archaeology, and the visual culture of ancient civilizations all find their way into her creative process. Alongside visual art, she's also passionate about music—particularly electronic music—and spends her free time playing instruments and collecting vinyl records.

Recently, ceramics has become another important medium for her, opening new possibilities to bring the surreal worlds of her drawings into physical form.

Looking ahead, Varvara hopes to collaborate with artists, galleries and creative spaces around the world. Her ambition is to create increasingly large-scale drawings and sculptures that connect with audiences internationally.
